Less of Me // Redux

I can honestly say that I have accomplished what I set out to do 20 months ago. At my best I lost around 65 pounds.

The problem is that I have become complacent. I have gained back about 12 pounds and have redeveloped some bad eating habits.

I’m really proud of this graph from 2009, while not so proud of 2010.

So here is my public re commitment to eating right and exercising. I’m using my special twitter account (@bradleydavis20) to document what I eat and usually post all of my workouts on my regular account (@bradleydavis).

My goal is to lose back down to about 195 and see how I feel. I don’t have a specific time period in mind, but I think sometime in January would be realistic.

If you see me, please feel free to keep me accountable. When I know that people are watching I’m much more likely to stay on the straight-and-narrow path.

Learning to Read Again

Mobile Photo Jan 19, 2010 9 46 53 PM A perpetual goal over the years has been to read more. It seems that each year I set a goal to read "a book a month" or "more". For some reason it has never seemed to work out.

I'm hoping this year will be different. I'm hoping that with the new discipline that I have found in my eating habits (in my mind they are linked for some reason) I may be able to make the time to read.

To that end I have started the year with a book that, I hope, will help me in my goal.

I'm also using goodreads.com as a "virtual bookshelf" of sorts. Here I can list books that I want to read and that I'm currently reading and keep up with what a few other people are reading.

I know that just like the discipline of exercise and eating right makes me healthier physically, the discipline of feeding my mind will make me a healthier person overall.

Maybe I'll even blog more.

2009 Fitness Results / 2010 Goals

2009 Weight Loss Chart

I ran across this image in my phone today. That's exciting! I lost 50lbs in 2009!

New goal = 20lbs more in 2010.

I'm really proud of the changes that Leslie and I made in 2009 that have led to a much healthier (and thinner) life. Last year I started even heavier than this chart shows and a year later I can consistently run a 5K in less than 30 minutes. I think that qualifies as a life style change.

This year I really want to move to running a 10K. I'm planning to steadily increase my distance in training through the spring and I want to RUN (not walk) the Peachtree Road Race this July.

(Maybe longer distances down the road)

After a notable absence here I have some exciting news! As of today I am down 40lbs!

If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook you have been seeing my almost daily updates about my runs and that has been a very encouraging experience. What started as simply needing to lose weight has really turned into a desire to be in shape! I have been running / walking up to a 5K every other day and I can really feel how much easier it is getting!

At this point I don't know where the journey takes me. Will I lose another 25lbs? Will I run the Peachtree Road Race or a Half Marathon next year?

Less of Me // Exercise

If you talk to just about anyone about losing weight they'll probably tell you that exercise is a key component. My problem is that I hate it.

The truth is that I had gotten to the point where I felt that I was too heavy to exercise. I was actually embarrassed to excercise because that meant that I was overweight. Pretty dumb.

One of the commitments that Leslie and I made when we decided that it was time to lose weight was to begin to exercise regularly. For the past few weeks our exercise has consisted of walks several times a week in our neighborhood with its steep hills.

1day25k_150 Now I am going to try to take it to another level. This week I've started a running program using a very cool podcast called Podrunner Intervals. Basically it guides you on when to run and when to walk while building you up over several weeks to the point where you can run a 5K.

I have to say that at this point it is really kicking my butt. I have hurting muscles that I didn't even know I had. I have no idea if this will stick or not, but I like the results so far.

Any suggestions from runners out there how a new runner should get started?
