Africa // The Reality

Overlook
The reality of Africa is that sometimes its a little harder to have consistent internet than you think it will be. I intended to post about my trip while I was there and try to relay some pictures and even video, but in the end that was just not practical.

The reality of the trip, however, was amazing! The story and the video that we were able to capture about the work that God is beginning to do among the Basotho people of Lesotho was priceless. We shot for five days and I was able to produce the 8 minute intro piece and the 30 prayer videos that we needed while on site in Lesotho (technology is really amazing).

Our whole team was generally really healthy (though I missed Leslie A LOT), but since coming home I have been sick for a couple of days.

I intend to try to do a few more posts talking about some of the other aspects of the trip and about the website that we'll be building and launching by the end of February.

Africa // Getting & Preparing my Stuff

Photo
Tonight Leslie and I spend time beginning to get me packed for the trip to Africa. I have a two page list of everything I am taking for myself and for filming. Its been amazing to see how God has provided all of the gear that I need for the trip. Friends and coworkers have been very generous with letting me borrow equipment for this project.

Through this process I am learning once again that God provides exactly what we need — but on His timetable. Over the past week He has provided a video camera (even when I thought it had fallen through), two sets of lighting, wireless mics and even cases for traveling. All at zero cost to me.

All the big puzzle pieces are in place and now I just have to figure out how to get it all over there. One of the major concerns is security. I'm planning to try to pack in luggage that looks like its average tourist stuff. Hopefully this way I won't arouse as much attention from customs or thieves.

I'll try to post more pictures of the preparations once I really begin to assemble all of the gear this week!

Africa // The Language

Lesotho
Dumela! In less than a week that will be the proper greeting for the people around me.

One of the hardest things with visiting any foreign country is overcoming the language barrier with the people all around you. In the area that we will be the people speak Sesotho and one of the ways that we are going to try to connect with the people around us is to know and use a few common greetings…

Please keep me and the team in your prayers over the next couple of weeks. We're now in an intense time of preparation. I'll post a little more about preparing soon — God is definitely at work in this trip…

New Apostles Live Page

This week we'll be launching a new viewer page for our live services at Church of the Apostles. Its not visible yet, but I wanted to share a very quick video of part of the creation of the page. Get ready for three hours of web design in 30 seconds…

Africa // What will we be doing?

The following is part of a conversation that I have had over a dozen times at this point…

"So, what are you going to be doing while you're over there?"

I reply, "We're going to produce a virtual prayer walk video."

The logical follow up question for most people would be, "What is a virtual prayer walk?"

Then I say, "I'm not sure yet…"

I have a passion to tell stories through the medium of video and to try to do so with excellence. I've seen dozens of bad mission trip videos (and made a few in the past). I know that there must be a better way to bring the stories and needs of people in remote places to churches who genuinely desire to help through missions — this was how the idea of this trip was born in me.

The phrase "Virtual Prayer Walk" was coined by my traveling companion (and Dad) who envisioned a video that would help people here in the United States understand the needs of a group of people, like the Basotho, and give them specific ways that they could pray for them. So we're going to try to do just that.

We plan to first produce an introductory video that will show who the people are and many of their basic needs. We'll focus on things like poverty, AIDS, social structure and history; plus we'll also talk to some of the local church leaders about their ministries and how people can pray for them.

Secondly we'll produce a series of one or two minute videos that will highlight specific stories and specific prayer requests.

The plan at this point is to bring all of this content back and create a website that will guide individuals, groups or even entire churches through a structured time of prayer over several weeks.
