Mobile Posting

20110318-110715.jpgI’m giving the wordpress iPhone app another shot.

The last time I tried this app (it’s been a while) I don’t think I could even get a post up from it. I’m not sure if the limitation was my hosting or the app itself, but it was bad.

If you’re seeing this, then it worked much better this time. Maybe mobile posting will motivate me to be a slightly more active blogger.

You need a gravatar

Do you ever comment on a website? Have you ever seen the little photo next to your comment? Is there a photo of you there? If not there should be.

One of the things that I have noticed about most of the sites that I work with is that people don’t seem to know how to get their photo to show up next to their comments. For a long time this was a mystery to me. I kept looking for a place within the site preferences to upload a picture. Fortunately you don’t have to do this on each site you visit!

The place to upload your photo is gravatar.com. The photo is simply linked to your email address and will show up next to your comments on any site where a gravatar is used (this is almost all WordPress sites). Here is a little more info about gravatars from their site.

Jetpack Rocks!

If you are a self-hosted WordPress user you need to get this new plugin from the creators of WordPress now! I love it.

For too long I have spent time tweaking the settings of my facebook and twitter share buttons on each new site to get them to line up with each other and sit below all of the content. Somehow I always seemed really close but never perfect. Now this plugin make that, among other things, dead simple.

The other big addition that I love is the easy integration of wordpress.com stats into the blog. I’ve never used them until now, but I like the additional info that offers!

JetPack is a free download and is a quick addition to you site!

Dealing with “Security Tool”

Today we took a quick trip to my in-law’s house to deal with some computer issues. This morning, Leslie got a call from her mom about a peculiar popup she was getting on her PC. Every program she tried to open just brought up a window telling her that the file was “infected” with something and that she needed a “security tool” to clean the system. Of course this solution would cost money.

Unfortunately, the problem was so bad that I couldn’t help over the phone. Once I got in front of the computer I realized that I couldn’t even run my favorite spyware / malware removal tool, Malwarebytes. The task manager and msconfig tools were also disabled.

Once I booted into safe mode I was able to run Malwarebytes and clear the issue. (If you are looking for a more detailed tutorial on removing this malware, there is a great guide at howtogeek.com.)

What really concerned me is how real this tool looked. I can see how the average computer user would be sucked into paying for this tool just so that the problem would go away. Essentially the computer is locked down until you pay or learn how to clean your machine.

This is simply another reason I love Apple and the OSX operating system. Since I switched to Apple I have never had to deal with any virus or malware threat — not even once! I think its time that Microsoft either restructure their OS to neutralize these threats, or buy their customers an Apple!

What kinds of computer problems do you commonly deal with?

Heading to NAB

Today i’m heading out to Las Vegas for the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) expo and convention. I’m really excited about seeing a TON of new gear and learning about how we can take our production to the next level.

This year I’m really looking for solutions in a couple of specific areas…

  • Streaming Solutions – We’re doing a lot of live and on demand streaming  on our own at Apostles, so I want to explore the latest in streaming.
  • Routing – As we move more of our facility over to HD we need to look at how our routing will change with it. I’m excited to see what’s new in the last two years.
  • Editing Software – I’ll be honest – Final Cut Pro needs work. I’m going to be looking at what editing software is available what trying to see what the pros and cons are. Apple, are you listening?
  • 3D – I’m really just curious about this one. I keep hearing about 3D television and I’m anxious to see what it looks like and what it takes to produce it.
  • Unknown – Sometimes the best stuff at NAB is the stuff that I don’t know I’m going to see. Sometimes the best find is at a booth from a company that you’ve never heard of.

I’ll try to post some of what I find this week here and on twitter.

Anything you want me to check out for you?
